My rant about portable game mentality!
It sucks that the large majority of game types I like have been going handheld-only! I mean it totally blows! There's nothing worse then being really into something only to have to stop because the battery is low. Waiting around a few hours for the things to finish charging really kills my momentum. The option to keep playing while charging isn't always there and even when it is, is inconvenient.

But thats not the worst part. No no. Even when you learn to get used to that you'll find the real problem is the games themselves. That awful mentality of portable games needing to be designed in such a way that they can be played in short bursts absolutely cheapens them. Imagine your favorite game series on a console. Now imagine its levels cut down to tiny little rooms with few enemies little else of interest. Don't like that thought huh? Well I'm living it!

Don't forget now that they all have to be "mission" based to ensure it takes no more then 3 minutes before you're back to a save point so that you can stop playing. Cause ya know, handhelds don't have sleep modes these days or anything. And cause its portable so you won't want to be playing long anyway. Riiiiiiiight. Plus there is development time wasted adding a mandatory co-op mode to try and ape Monster Hunters success.

Also everything sans the "main" gameplay is menu based now. Run around towns in Phantasy Star Portable, .hack//Link and many others? Nope! That's not allowed! Going from menu to 3D gameplay and back simply destroys the immersiveness of the game world. I hate it! Its made worse due to the fact that these games get talking-head syndrome where instead of in-engine character models talking to one another you get 2D character portraits instead! When these popup during the 3D gameplay portions of the games it knocks immersiveness down even more.

Pretty much the worst way they cheapen the games presentation however, is by utilizing the awful fucking AWFUL comic-style cutscenes. That shit is GARBAGE. Nothing screams "cutscene" like a series of still images am I right? So on top of menus, gameplay, and talking heads you yet have this fourth type of game presentation. Hey devs ya ever heard of cohesiveness? Guess not! I can't understand it. Its like they forgot how to make games the moment they switched from console to handheld even when said handheld is about equal in power to the console they made the previous games in the series on! Its so stupid!!
